Forget Pharmaceuticals-try a nutraceutical

The pharmaceutical industry is a trillion dollar a year business. Every medical issue known to modern medicine has some sort of fix through drugs. In some cases, they can be life savers. In other cases, the most common medical issues such as acid reflux or heart burn, have been labeled a disease so the pharmaceutical companies can patent a drug. Our society spends billions of dollars on pharmaceuticals every year and all of them have some kind of undesirable side effect. Again, in some cases they are necessary. But, what if we could change our life style and our health without having to put a band aid on the wound? This thought process has become more and more popular in recent years, yet there are more and more people taking drugs than ever. It is a vicious cycle.

What if many of our health issues could be controlled and even reversed creating long term health? For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. That is physics. There aren't too many people that die from good nutrition but millions of people a year die from drug overdoses, taking the wrong medication or suffer from the side effects.

The new buzz word for people interested in good health and alternative medicines is Nutraceutical.. New superjuices act and work like a pharmaceutical but no side effects, what a concept.

We are told that it is recommended to consume 5-7 servings of fruits a day. The importance of antioxidants and it's impact on our overall health and well being is clear but, I began to wonder:

Do the fruits we eat consume contain any harmful pesticides? I know I have always heard about the importance of washing your fruit but what about fruits that absorb these pesticides? What about the soil that these fruit come from. We buy organic fruit and still don't really know what we are getting. How do we know what happened to the fruit before it reached our mouth unless the fruit was home grown or bought at a farmers market? All good questions. I think what we don't know will hurt us.

The bottom line is that 5-7 servings of fruit a day is hard enough to consume. Factor in how much it costs to purchase and prepare. Also, are we getting the full nutritional value of these fruits? No one knows for sure. As well, what are the best fruits to buy? Some fruits don't have as high of an ORAC value( the nutritional value) as others. I love fruit and try to eat as much of it as possible. After doing the research, I realized that consuming the right kinds and amounts of fruits and vegetables was just as important as how they were prepared and grown. It makes my head spin to think about it. Fortunately, there is a solution.

Most people either don't have the time or the tolerance to take a ton of vitamins nor do they have the time or resources to digest 5-7 fruits a day. Our fast paced lives don't always permit it. We are more prone to driving through a fast food restaurant and ordering the #3 special. Unfortunately, the foods we eat and the air we breathe is what causes problems. We must protect ourselves from free radicals and keep our immune system in top shape. Vitamins are not easily absorbed and the body typically flushes them out. The body absorbs 98% of the juice and has been proven to protect us from free radical damage, an important factor in the aging process. Inflammation is a cause for concern since it is the root of many health issues. Acai helps to fight inflammation and has been reported as helping people feel great and control many of their ailments without drugs.

According to Paul Zane Pilzer, one of our leading economists, the wellness industry will become a trillion dollar industry by 2010. This is significant since the sickness industry has been in the trillions of dollars for many years now. It is time we take control of our lives. Knowledge is power and we all have a choice.

If every action has a consequence and a reaction, I contend that I want to make the most of my life and enjoy my later years without being attached to a litany of prescription medications that ultimately do more harm than good. It is a hard, long fight to stay healthy and live long. A little knowledge will go a long way to help protect you both health wise and wealth wise.
